Paintings
I use vintage family photographs to create paintings based on the iconography and the sacred hierarchical messages of Medieval and Renaissance altarpieces and illuminated manuscripts. The mediums of egg tempera and gold leaf, wooden panels and vellum replicate the look of early religious imagery.
Inspired by vintage objects and my family’s vintage photographs, I question the meaning of family and the gendered messages and myths surrounding traditional women’s roles. I make paintings, prints, stop motion videos, books and costumes from vintage 1940 patterns, and photo digital collages of rooms in period metal dollhouses. I place myself inside wearing the costumes and performing "woman's work."
